I put this kitchen in in 2002…and photographed it 18 years later.

I took this photograph in 2020, when I got the chance to revisit this London kitchen 18 years after I installed it. It was a small, inexpensive but carefully chosen kitchen designed to take wear and tear by the 5 young adults renting the house. We used tough worktops, doubled up the wall cabinets to allow plenty of storage space (and avoid dusty cluttered top-of-cupboard spaces!), and used timeless flat fronted units that were easy to wipe down. White metro tiles were robust, easy to clean and a classic look. The house is still a rental, and although it is probably time for a new floor, the choices we made haven’t dated, haven’t fallen apart, and on the whole I felt that this kitchen had aged rather better than me in the last two decades!
